2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid Sedan

The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid is largely unchanged from last year. A couple of cosmetic tweaks here and there is about all. Few will notice the difference, but why fix what isn’t broken?

The Toyota Camry has been our sedan of choice for over ten years. For the past nine, it has been the country’s best selling passenger vehicle. While that’s a great thing for Toyota, it does say something about us as a society.

That our favorite car is an ordinary, run of the mill, sensible sedan car. Fortunately we’re here to review the car, not have a sociological discussion!

The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid has distinct advantages over most other hybrids with perhaps the exception of the Fusion. It’s almost exactly the same as a normal car, with none of the downsides of hybrid technology. It’s slightly more expensive than the normal Camry, but not enough to put you off buying one.

That means families in the market for a new Camry can go hybrid without even having to think about it. The interior is the same, the quality and reliability are the same, the car is essentially the same on the surface. That makes it a winner.

The 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine is as smooth as anything Toyota have made. It produces 147 bhp and 138 lb-ft of torque. It works with the electric motor, which produces a further 40 bhp. The energy is sent to the front wheels via a CVT transmission.

Offering 33/34 miles per gallon has earned the Camry hybrid the Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) ticket. That’s good news for the marketing department, but doesn’t make much difference to the owner.

They are more interested in the real-life gains from the increased gas mileage.

The inside of the 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid is okay. It’s well-built, the materials are of a decent quality, and everything is in the right place. The use of blue LED lights for the dashboard and interior lighting is a nice touch.

The seats are comfortable and supportive, and have enough head and legroom for even the tallest people. Even in the rear there is still room for almost everyone. The Camry will comfortably sit five without too many compromises.

Trunk space is limited by the large battery pack that sits in the corner. It reduces the available space from 15 cubic feet down to a little under 11. That’s still enough room for the groceries, but one of the few shortcomings of a hybrid.

The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition and entry, an eight-way power driver seat, a 60/40-split rear seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming rear view mirror, trip computer and a six-speaker CD/MP3 stereo.

The experience of driving and owning the 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid is pretty much the same as owning a standard one. The gas engine is capable and refined, and the electric motor adds some well needed boost.

The electric motor can also run independently when there are low power demands. That means under 30 miles an hour, or when cruising, the car can run on electric power alone. That is another serious advantage this car has over its hybrid rivals. Not all of them can run on electric without the gas engine providing power.

The steering and suspension are the only negatives of this review. Cornering the Camry is similar to doing it in a speedboat. The body rolls, the corner seems to take forever and there isn’t that much feedback from the wheel. Changing direction is a little lifeless, and doesn’t provide enough information through the wheel to the driver.

However, considering that is the only downside to the whole deal, it shouldn’t put prospective buyers off the car.

As the Camry is the best-selling sedan in the country, the hybrid version is likely to follow that trend. With competition in the hybrid market hotting up, there may be discounts to be had. New car deals may be less obvious than usual, but the market is too sluggish and the competition too close to not have them.

Scion

Scion

Scion | CAR REVIEW | Scion is a brand of vehicles produced by Toyota Motor Corporation for the North American market. Founded in 2002, the objective of long-term Scion is attracting consumers of Generation Y. The first model Scion xB station wagon and XA hatchback , sold in California in 2003, followed by a sports coupe, Scion TC, and launch in all U.S. market in 2004. The successor of  Scion Xa ,  the xD, launched in 2008, and the Scion brand broadened in Canada in 2010. The line-up of  Scion , uses a fast and simplified to purchase, and the brand has focused on techniques of guerrilla and viral marketing. The name Scion, which means descendant of a family or an heir, refers to cars both brand and their owners.

Scion
Scion TC 2011

Only a few years, Scion is the youngest brand in the market - a fact which seems appropriate since it is directed against a very young demographic. Scion has quickly found a home in the hearts of buyers seeking a winning blend of value and style. Icing on the cake is that Scion is a part of the Toyota family, offering all the quality and reliability you expect from a brand with his parents.

Scion
Scion IQ 2010

In 1999, Toyota launched Project Genesis, an effort to bring younger buyers to the Toyota marque in the United States. This project aimed to create a "marque within a marque" in sales and advertising strategy for compact and coupe models sold by Toyota. The effort, which included the introduction of the Toyota Echo economy car, along with late generation Toyota MR-2 and Toyota Celica models, was judged unsuccessful and cancelled in 2001. In response, Toyota chose to launch a separate marque, an effort called Project Exodus. A Los Angeles based digital design company, Fresh Machine (led by Wyndham Chow and Richard Bolton), was retained by Toyota to develop the brand, logo and launch website. This project became known as Scion.

Scion
Scion XB 2009

When Toyota realized early in the 21st century that it was losing market share in the younger demographic due to a stodgy image, the company took a chance and decided to spin off a new brand called Scion (its name means "descendant" or "heir to"). The first Scions, the xA and xB models, were introduced for the 2004 model year. These edgy little cruisers were first available only in the California market; after a staggered rollout, Scion vehicles became available nationwide.

Scion
Scion XD 2008

Scion was first introduced in March 2002, at the New York Auto Show. There were just two concept vehicles, the bbX (which became the xB), and the ccX (which became the tC). The 2004 xA and xB were unveiled at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show on January 2, 2003. They were available only in 105 Toyota dealerships in California at their initial launch on June 6, 2003. The subsequent rollout of the brand to the South, the Southeast, and the East Coast occurred in February 2004. Scion vehicles were available nationwide in June 2004, coinciding with the release of the 2005 tC. On December 16, 2006, Scion unveiled the next-generation xB, based on the t2B concept, and the new xD, successor of the xA, at an invitation-only, no-camera event in Miami. Both cars were then publicly unveiled on February 8, 2007 at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show.

Scion
Scion TC 2007

Both the xA and xB were immediate hits, snapped up by young (or young at heart) buyers looking for high-quality, fun and affordable wheels. The boxy yet funky styling of the Scions provided a lot of passenger and cargo room for the cars' small footprints, making them ideal choices for campus and urban residents alike. They also coddled the youth market with flashy sound systems; Scion's stereos are among the best in the economy-car segment.

Scion
Scion XA 2006

Scion stems from Toyota's well publicized use of "Value Innovation", a series of articles in Harvard Business Review later encapsulated in the book Blue Ocean Strategy. Key factors of Toyota's strategy canvas were never published but include "Price," "Factor Options," "Performance driving metrics," "Confidence in buying," "21st Century Radio."

Scion
Scion XA 2005

The following year, the Scion brood grew to include the tC. This sport coupe offered more performance relative to its older siblings, thanks largely to a more powerful engine. The xA has since been replaced by the xD, which carries on the quirky and customizable spirit of its predecessor.

Scion
Scion XB 2004

Toyota Canada Inc. announced that the Scion brand will be available in September 2010 at 45 selected dealers starting in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, followed by other cities. Launch models include tC, xD, xB. The Toyota iQ shown in Tokyo will be sold in Canada as a Scion model, starting in 2011 as a 2012 model. The first new Scions were shown in Canada at the 2009 Montreal International Auto Show.

Scion
Scion XB 2003

Interest in keeping things simple for buyers, only cut the scions. However, buyers have the ability to modify them to drive a series of aftermarket accessories, such as a subwoofer, custom body kits and exhaust pipes. Scion also offers no haggle over prices, the same policy, which is offered by Saturn. With this system, buyers pay the list (window sticker) price, improving the process of negotiation.

Scion
Scion TC 2006

So far, no haggle prices, a wide range of simple, well-equipped models and a variety of dealer-added options combine to make the Scion brand a surprise hit with American consumers. The segment of the economy car is not exactly the first place you would be smart, fun to drive, but Scion has changed all that by offering cars with a rich seductive exuberance contrasts with its modest price. - CAR REVIEW

Honda and Toyota: Getting Back on Track

This year hasn’t been the kindest to Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota. The devastation wrought by March’s earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, resulted in severe disruptions to their supply chains, causing dealer inventories to run low and other automakers to gain ground in sales. However, after a dismal July, there are signs that both Honda and Toyota are gaining momentum; supply from Japan has

Toyota shooting for Nurburgring EV Lap record on August 29

Toyota has reportedly announced it will attempt to smash the existing electric vehicle lap record at the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife on August 29.

The current electric vehicle lap record at the 'Ring stands at 9 minutes and 1.338 seconds, a time that Toyota says it has already beaten during informal testing. On August 29, Toyota will hit the track with a battery-powered two-seater that soars to a claimed top speed of 162 miles per hours, rips from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and is loosely based on the radical Alpha-1 SRF, a vehicle developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH for German firm e-Wolf.

Rob Leupen, Toyota Motorsport's director of business operations, told the Charging Point, "We are extremely confident we can break the record by some distance, which is an indication of how electric vehicle performance is continuously improving." Only time we tell if Toyota's attempt to tame the 'Ring blows a hole through the existing record, which is held by the spectalur Peugeot EX1.

Toyota India cars sales, toyota vehicle sales 2011 increased 100% in india

Toyota India cars sales, toyota vehicle sales 2011 increased 100% in india | Car Sales | Toyota Kirloskar Motor Limited (TKML), the Indian subsidiary of Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation, which has increased its production capacity in the first plant to 80,000 units, up 10 per cent from 73,000 units, is planning to more than double its vehicle sales in India in 2011. This includes both passenger cars and utility vehicles in its stable.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Limited (TKML), which is likely to close calendar year 2010 with total sales of 73,000 units, up from 51,400 units sold in 2009, a growth of 42 per cent, is looking to selling 150,000 units in 2011, mainly driven by sales of the Etios, a top company official said. Toyota aims to sell 70,000 units of Etios, both sedan and hatchback put together.

“We have recently increased our production capacity in the first plant. With the commencement of our second plant with an annual capacity of 70,000 units, we are looking at total sales in excess of 150,000 units next year. Half of the targeted sales will come from our new ‘B’ segment car, Etios,” Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director, TKML said.

Presently, Toyota manufactures Corolla Altis, Innova and Fortuner in Bangalore plant and imports Camry, Prado, Prius and Land Cruiser as completely built units (CBUs). Etios production has commenced in its second plant and will be delivered to customers from January 1, 2011.

Singh said, the company has established the flexible production unit for Etios car and depending on the customer preference it would make changes in the production of either the hatchback or sedan. To begin with, Toyota will sell Etios only in the domestic market and explore the possibility of exporting it only in 2012, he told Business Standard.

“We have no plans to export Etios in the first year as we expect good demand from the domestic market. However, we do have plans to export this car from India. We are yet to decide when and to which markets to export this car,” he said.

While the second plant is designed for 100,000 units per annum, Toyota would produce only 70,000 units in 2011, he said adding, depending on the demand it would raise the output in the second plant. The company plans to start a second shift in June next year, he said.

The company has invested Rs3,200 crore to set up the second manufacturing plant as well as develop Etios for both Indian and world markets. Toyota employs 4,700 employees in both its plants and aims to increase the headcount to over 5,000 later this year.

“Although India is the first launch market for Etios, the platform will be launched in other markets as well. The next launch market for Toyota Etios would be Brazil in 2012,” Singh said.

Toyota will also increase the localisation content in Etios from 70 per cent to over 95 per cent by end of 2012, when the transmission and engine plant goes on stream in Bidadi near Bangalore, he added. - CAR SALES

Toyota Targets at Least 16,000 U.S. Plug-In Prius Sales

Toyota said it expects U.S. sales of at least 16,000 plug-in Prius hatchbacks in 2012 after the model debuts early in the year.

The new version of the world’s best-selling hybrid, designed to be recharged at a standard 110-volt outlet, will go at least 13 miles solely on its lithium-ion battery pack, John Hanson, a Toyota spokesman, said in an interview. After that, it will operate like a standard Prius, averaging 50 miles per gallon of gasoline in city and highway driving, he said.

“We think it’s going to be a strong seller and we’ll deliver to whatever level the market wants,” he said yesterday. “We’re certainly on line to sell 16,000 to 17,000 in 2012.”

Toyota has dominated sales of alternative-power vehicles since it brought the Prius to the U.S. in 2000, selling 140,928 of the hybrids last year. The new version from the Toyota City, Japan-based company joins a market for rechargeable autos led this year by Nissan Motor Co.’s electric Leaf and General Motors Co. (GM)’s plug-in Volt.

The Leaf and Volt offer greater all-electric range, with as much as 100 miles for the Yokohama, Japan-based Nissan’s model and about 35 miles for the GM car. The Prius plug-in will have a pricing edge. Hanson said the new version will begin U.S. sales “very early” next year, without elaborating.

Toyota’s target is “reasonable, but the issue will be availability,” said Alan Baum, principal of automotive consulting firm Baum & Associates in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The Japan-built plug-in will also be in demand in Toyota’s home market and Europe, so U.S. supplies may be tight, he said.

Federal, State Incentives

Toyota expects the plug-in Prius to sell for $3,000 to $5,000 more than a standard version, which starts at $23,520, said Jana Hartline, a company spokeswoman.

The car should qualify for a federal tax credit of at least $2,500, Hartline said. While Toyota hasn’t begun a promotional campaign for the plug-in, 29,000 potential customers have “pre- registered” to buy one on the company’s website, she said.

In California, the plug-in Prius should also qualify for a $1,500 rebate and be allowed to use carpool lanes even with a solo driver, said Mike Ferry, program manager for the state’s Center for Sustainable Energy, which distributes the payments. The most populous U.S. state is requiring sales of plug-ins and battery-only autos starting in 2012 to reduce pollution.
Leaf, Volt Prices

Nissan said yesterday that 2012 model Leafs would cost $35,200 to $37,250, an increase of 7.4 percent and 10 percent from 2011 versions, to cover additional equipment. That’s before a $7,500 federal tax credit. Ferry said the Leaf also qualifies for a $2,500 California rebate in 2012 and carpool-lane access.

GM’s Volt costs $40,280, before the $7,500 federal tax credit. While the 2011 Volt didn’t qualify for California rebates, the Detroit-based automaker has said it will meet state requirements by 2012. That would let buyers get a $1,500 rebate and access to carpool lanes with a solo driver, Ferry said.

Toyota’s Hartline said the plug-in Prius’s “relatively small battery” doesn’t require 240-volt home chargers, which cost about $2,000 to install and may also require rewiring for older houses that can add a few thousand dollars in expenses.

“We’re finding in our research, from our demonstration program, that that is an appealing factor for many people,” said Hartline, who is based at Toyota’s U.S. sales unit in Torrance, California. The model recharges in three hours from a 110-volt outlet or as little as 90 minutes from a 240-volt charger, she said.
